Clearance Requirements
Our client owned a three-bedroom flat above a small shop on Richmond Road in Twickenham, London, and had been living in the flat with two of his friends for a number of years. He had recently decided to sell the flat and buy something larger so we were asked to help him empty it of all the contents that he did not want to keep.
Clearance Overview
We parked our vans in the space around the back of the building, right next to the exit. We then started to carry the furniture and effects out of the flat and down the stairs, always taking great care not to rush so as to avoid accidents. The wardrobe from the first bedroom was the largest item that we had to remove, and it took four of us to get it down the stairs. However, we are very experienced with such large items and it was no problem at all, and within a few minutes it was loaded into the van. We worked all morning and most of the afternoon, steadily but surely emptying the flat. Our client wanted to keep some goods, including the sofa, a desk and some chairs, so we left these in one corner because he had not decided what to do with them yet. During the afternoon we cleared out all of the bedrooms, and it was in one of the bedrooms that we came across a wallet that contained some money. There was about £100 in total, so we handed this over to the client as we always do whenever we find anything of value or of personal significance. In the end we finished the job just after 5.30pm.

Nearly all of the goods were suitable for reusing, so instead of throwing them away we selected a few local charities and asked them if they would like to receive them as donations. In this way we were able to find new homes for the furniture, bowls, plates, cutlery, books, DVDs and other items that had been cleared from the flat, so that only a very small percentage of the items from this clearance had to be sent to landfill.
