Clearance Overview
We were asked to carry out a house clearance on London Road, Newbury, RG14, which was located on a busy road. However, off-street parking was available in the driveway. The owner lived abroad but had returned to deal with clearing the house contents of the property. She was only back in the UK for two weeks, so it was important that we worked quickly and we arranged the clearance the day after she called. Her plan was to sell the property or live in it herself in the future. Either way, it required a full house clearance and a deep clean and would remain empty for a few months at the least. We were asked to turn off the heating and switch off the power at the mains.
Clearance Requirements
We turned up at 7 a.m. and were met by the owner. She gave us a quick overview of the work needed. She had placed a few items in one of the upstairs bedrooms that she did not want removed, and had labelled a few others that she wanted to keep. We then continued to clear all remaining house contents. The client went off to do other things while we carried out the clearance, and asked us to call her when we were about an hour from finishing. We cleared everything but left the items for retention. We came across some bits and pieces which we put to one side in case the lady had missed them and wanted to keep them. We then vacuumed the entire property throughout and gave the bathroom and kitchen a quick clean down as requested. The carpets cleaned up very well after a good hoover and did not need replacement. To finish off we took a stiff broom to the footpaths and swept them clean.
Disposal of Contents
The books, records and TV were all donated to charities operating in the area. We already knew a few charities we had worked with before on previous clearances and they were happy to take the donation. A few household effects were sent to our recycling centre, and only a very small proportion of the items we cleared had to go to landfill.
