Plastic waste was always going to present a challenge. Because if the government were to take it out with a single hammer blow, this could have major repercussions. Factories could close. Jobs would go. For these reasons we have to go along with United Kingdom tackling plastic waste piece by piece.
However, Jeffrey Avery Associates is also mindful most plastic is a petroleum by-product, and therefore originates from fossil fuel. The long-term consequences will do more than cost factories and jobs. Indeed the very survival of humanity could be hanging in that balance.
United Kingdom Homes In On Tackling Plastic Waste
The UK Government consulted with a range of stakeholders last Autumn 2021. This time it had its eyes on single-use products. These include plastic plates, cutlery and polystyrene cups, as part of a drive to eliminate dumped household waste completely.
That’s because these are major polluters after plastic bags on which it already levies a tax. Has England become such a takeaway, throwaway society to reach this extreme?
The government website sounded confident when it posted ‘The war on plastic waste is set to ramp up with fresh plans’. That’s fresh plans to stop the supply of a range of single-use plastics that threaten our natural environment.
These Key Components in Fly Tipping Could Vanish
We were grateful to hear this fresh affirmation of renewed determination. We invite anybody reading this article that does not agree to join us on a tour of Greater London. This might include Beckenham we know so well, and Mitcham where we have our base.
It’s blatantly obvious law enforcement has become highly selective, with some officials focusing on soft targets. While ignoring so-called waste collectors who dump their spoils on local farms, and down country lanes where we once cycled as kids.
Prosecutions Necessary to Tackle UK Plastic Waste
The government will never eliminate single-use plastic plates, cutlery and polystyrene cups if it does not enforce the law. Importing these products from places that allow their manufacture will continue as criminals take the gap. They don’t care about over 100,000 sea mammals and turtles perishing every year from eating or tangling in plastic waste.
If the United Kingdom is serious about tackling this plastic waste, it should introduce stricter law enforcement. Especially against antisocial elements who still see fly tipping as a trivial offence. We encounter this practice regularly when we tender for house clearance contracts. This is especially true when clients are from deceased estates where compulsive hoarders once lived.
Major Effort to Tackle United Kingdom Plastic Waste
The sheer volume of work is astounding, and almost defies logic:
- Each person in England uses an average 18 single-use plastic plates, and 37 single-use plastic items of cutlery every year.
- If we discount children that comes to 1,206 million single-use plastic plates. Not to mention 2,479 million single-use plastic items of cutlery per adult.
- These could moulder for centuries in landfill sites, or litter the countryside or ocean forever because plastic is so incredibly durable.
UK Industry Promises to Come to the Government Party
No United Kingdom government proposal for tackling plastic waste on a large scale can succeed without participation of stakeholders. Jeffrey Avery Associates are therefore heartened to hear UK industry is also taking action to tackle plastic waste. This will roll out within the framework of the UK Plastics Pact. This is a collaboration between businesses from across the entire plastics value chain.
This agreement merges efforts of the entire plastics value chain, with UK government strategies to tackle the scourge of plastic waste according to Wrap.Org. This is a climate action NGO working around the globe to tackle the causes of the climate crisis, and give the planet a sustainable future. They formed in the UK in 2000, and now work in over 40 countries.
Will a New Environment Bill Add the Final Touch?
The new environment bill introduces these new measures;
- A deposit scheme for drinks bottles to encourage users to recycle.
- Measures requiring companies to cover recovery and recycling cost.
- Makers of commonly-littered products to be responsible for cleaning up costs
The hope is for the United Kingdom to become a world leader in plastics management again.
I had my late mother’s flat to clear out. The contact with Avery Associates was a pleasure from day one, starting with the receptionist. Jeffrey then came out to look at the flat and ascertain what was required. Because of the contents of the flat it was a scenario where Avery Associates would make a payment to me.
The deal was done and shortly thereafter Adam and Paul came to clear the flat. It was done very efficiently and the cleaning was also carried out well. They had discovered a box of my mother’s old photographs, I didn’t know they were there. Rather than just taking the box as part of the clearance they left it for me…well done.
No hesitation in giving them 5 stars. It was a seamless experience. (P Macavoy)
