Major Effort to Tackle United Kingdom Plastic Waste
The sheer volume of work is astounding, and almost defies logic:
- Each person in England uses an average 18 single-use plastic plates, and 37 single-use plastic items of cutlery every year.
- If we discount children that comes to 1,206 million single-use plastic plates. Not to mention 2,479 million single-use plastic items of cutlery per adult.
- These could moulder for centuries in landfill sites, or litter the countryside or ocean forever because plastic is so incredibly durable.
UK Industry Promises to Come to the Government Party
No United Kingdom government proposal for tackling plastic waste on a large scale can succeed without participation of stakeholders. Jeffrey Avery Associates are therefore heartened to hear UK industry is also taking action to tackle plastic waste. This will roll out within the framework of the UK Plastics Pact. This is a collaboration between businesses from across the entire plastics value chain.
This agreement merges efforts of the entire plastics value chain, with UK government strategies to tackle the scourge of plastic waste according to Wrap.Org. This is a climate action NGO working around the globe to tackle the causes of the climate crisis, and give the planet a sustainable future. They formed in the UK in 2000, and now work in over 40 countries.
Will a New Environment Bill Add the Final Touch?
The new environment bill introduces these new measures;
- A deposit scheme for drinks bottles to encourage users to recycle.
- Measures requiring companies to cover recovery and recycling cost.
- Makers of commonly-littered products to be responsible for cleaning up costs
The hope is for the United Kingdom to become a world leader in plastics management again.
