New research from investment managers Brewin Dolphin has revealed that a massive 63% of Brits do not have a will.
This is quite surprising news, and means that a large proportion of the country are unprepared for what might happen after they die.
Making a will is very important for providing financial support to loved ones and making sure that the deceased’s money and estate is divided up according to their wishes. Anyone who fails to make a will may end up not being able to provide for their loved ones as they wish when they pass away.
The research revealed that 57% of married couples do not have any will, which could cause serious problems on top of the obvious distress if one partner dies.
Interestingly, the research also revealed that there are some moments in life which are more likely to lead to the creation of a will.
For example, 18% of the respondents were more likely to make a will following the birth of of a child, 13% when they got married, 12% when getting a mortgage and 11% following the death of a friend or family member.
As well as that, Brewin Dolphin looked into the factors which typically led to delays in making a will. These included people not thinking it was worthwhile due to having a lack of assets, those who considered themselves too young, not thinking it important at the moment or simply finding the idea too morbid.
However, despite all of these reasons, the fact is that people are leaving their loved ones unprotected if they do not make a will. It is now quick and simple to make a legal will, and the peace of mind that it brings to the person making the will is well worth it.
