RICS Probate Valuation Slough, Berkshire SL2 – Chattels Valuation of Far Eastern Chest

March 23, 2012 By Avery Associates

It was during a recent probate valuation in Slough, Berkshire SL2, probate valuers find an antique 19th century far eastern brass bound chest.

Far Eastern Chest Valued For Probate

Avery Associates are regularly instructed to carry out probate valuation in Berkshire and while preparing the probate valuation of chattels at the Slough property that the interesting 19th century chest came to light. The fine piece of far eastern crftmanship sat just inside the front door as if it had been there all of its life.

All Berkshire Areas Covered

This report was carried out in Slough but we also carry out probate valuation in Burghfield, Boxford, Ashampstead, Aldermaston, Britwell, Beech Hill and Beenham, but it was during the probate valuation of house contents in Slough, Berks that the trunk was found.

The History Of Flat Top Trunks

The classic flat top trunks with canvas or metal background and hardwood staves were made from about the 1870s to around 1920. These trunks were the workhorses of that period. Many manufacturers around the world put them out in vast numbers. Their basic shape and design is a rectangular box covered in varying thickness of canvas (some is so thick it could be called burlap) or sheet metal and then hardwood staves, metal trim and hardware added. Some flat tops of this type were covered in sheet metal between the staves. This metal was usually plain flat tin but sometimes had embossed patterns to make them look like they were covered in canvas. Most had trays inside but the trays were usually not made nearly as sturdily as the trunks themselves, therefore many found today will be missing the tray.

Other Items Of Furniture Valued For Probate Purposes

Other items valued were an oak farmhouse table and 8 chairs, a georgean walnut display cabinet a selection of oriental ceramics rugs pictures and general collectables along with  a good amount of residual everyday items that were added to the final figure for iht calculations. Chattels valuations vary dramatically and it is quite normal for us to find items of high value so it is wise to use experienced valuers. Our RICS probate valuation will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.
