Jeffrey Avery & Associates are regularly instructed to carry out house clearance and probate valuation in Surrey and while preparing the probate valuation of chattels at an Epsom property that the collection of Victorian solid silver was appraised and valued for IHT purposes.
Details and photos of a recent probate valuation in Epsom, Surrey KT17, probate valuers report specifies a collection of victorian silver – House clearance service also provided.
The report was carried out in Epsom but we have also carried out probate valuation in Effingham, Egham, Elstead, Englefield Green, Esher and Ewell, but it was during the probate valuation of house contents in Epsom Surrey that the silver items wer viewed. We also carried out a full house clearance for the client to assist in winding up the estate.
Silver items have always had a respectable value as decorative objects and the finer the craftsmanship the more value it would have and good pieces dating from the Victorian period and before command good prices. Items dating from the Georgian era and before are now becoming very desirable and making high prices at auction. A good set of solid silver candlesticks can easily make four figures. But of late and with the rising prices of scrap metal later more ordinary silver items dating from the 20 century have become worth only their scrap value which is hovering at around £20 per troy ounce, so for example a modern solid silver platter or serving tray with a plain design weighing 36ozs will be worth approximately £760 as scrap, but as an object not more than £250. Silver is a very good investment and it is speculated that it might reach record prices over the next ten years due to its demand in the electronics industry coupled with the fact that it is in short supply worldwide and only a few silver mines in existence, mainly in Mexico.
As well as the silver collection the estate included a selection of early oak country and farmhouse furniture along with an amount of lesser collectibles and general household effects that were all added into the general part of the report. Chattels valuations vary dramatically and it is quite normal for us to find items of high value so it is wise to use experienced valuers. Our RICS probate valuation will ensure that the chattels are not under or overvalued.
