Rare Suffragette W.S.P.U Imprisonment Badge Found Amongst costume jewelry
During a recent estate clearance being undertaken by Avery Associates, one of our specialist appraisers noticed an interesting badge among some otherwise insignificant costume jewellery. The iconic purple, red and green colours of the W.S.P.U ( Womens Social & Political Union ) had caught the eye of one of our specialists, and further research was undertaken.
Specially Presented To Holloway Lady Prisoners
The small silver and enamel badge turned out to have been awarded to Suffragettes that were imprisoned in Holloway Prison during the struggle to gain votes for women during the early part of the twentieth century. A highly emotive and important part of social history had come to light !
Extensive research with auction houses and collectors resulted in the executors of the estate achieving a sale price in excess of £2000. The brooch is now amongst other Suffragette badges in a superb collection.
