When I arrived to meet the client everything looked normal and the property from outside looked tidy and well maintained. We entered the house and immediately I found myself confronted with a mass of dvd’s and books. They were stacked waist high on every step, and all the way up the stairs, as well as the hallway downstairs. We made our way through the narrow gap and I clearly remember the client saying “he liked his music” (an understatement to say the least). Apart from the kitchen which was equally well stocked with crockery and cooking utensils in abundance every room was stacked from floor to head height with a selection of cd’s, dvd’s and videos as well as hundreds of magazines the majority of which were still unopened in sealed packets. Thankfully the loft was empty and to my surprise the garden shed and outhouse were fairly clear although the garden was somewhat overgrown. We agreed to clear the property for a fixed price with a small contingency fund if we found any hidden surprises. We returned 3 days later at 6am to start clearing, carefully and methodically and to make sure that as much of the contents as possible went for re-use or recycling.
2 Day Job
We managed to complete around 40 % of the clearance on the first day, clearing the majority of the remaining contents on the second day and completely finished on the third day. Finally we hoovered the property from top to bottom and cut back the garden to a manageable level. In total we cleared over 18,000 cd’s, 1000 dvd’s 3000 vinyl lp’s several hundred books and a fair amount of general clutter. We are pleased to say that on this particular occasion we were able to re-use almost everything in the house. It would be fair to say that the contents weighed around 5 ton and the property had become unsafe due to the extreme weight of contents in the upstairs rooms with the risk of the floors collapsing. Our client who was acting as executor was very satisfied with the work and gave a recommendation to his solicitor.
