Clearance Overview
We were requested to clear a two bedroom ground floor maisonette in Byng Street, Canary Wharf, Poplar, London E14. The owner had died tragically while on holiday in Venezuela, and we acted on behalf of the executors. As the property was rented, we needed to clear it as quickly as possible so as to avoid the estate being required to continue to pay rent. We were also requested to remove the garden furniture and other items in the outside areas of the property and leave it neat and tidy. We often find that we are requested to carry out house clearance after we value house contents for probate, but in this case a property clearance was the only requirement.
Clearance Requirements
We requested and received a temporary parking permit from Tower Hamlets Borough Council, without which it would have been impossible. We arrived early, at 6 a.m. to avoid the traffic, and immediately set to work. The furniture was of modern design and very stylish, and we were able to offset some of the cost of the clearance on the basis that it had resale value. Some of it needed to be dismantled in order to remove it , which we did. Our instruction was to leave the carpets and white goods in the kitchen, as they belonged to the landlord.
Disposal of Contents
It is our normal practice to work hard to ensure that as little as possible of the contents are disposed of in landfill. Some of the items were re-sold, but we were also able to donate some of the furniture and personal effects to local charity shops, thereby benefiting local charities. Only a small proportion of the contents was sent to landfill, the majority of it either being recycled or re-sold and re-used.

The client, who lives abroad, stated that he found our service ‘very helpful and efficient’, and the landlord inspected the property and declared himself to be ‘completely satisfied’. We handed the keys to the landlord.
Additional Information
This previous owner of this property was part of a consortium of people who took the owners of 1 Canada Square until recently the tallest building in the UK, to court and lost, on the basis that the tower interfered with their television reception. Most of the properties in the street now subscribe to a communal satellite dish system. 1 Canada Square was replaced as the UK’s tallest building earlier this year when the Shard at London Bridge was completed.
