Sometimes these include very valuable items, and sometimes the items are rare and of huge interest to the nation. Such a find has recently come to light in the form of two postcards which were sent by one of Britain’s favourite poets, Siegfried Sassoon, to a friend over 70 years ago.
The two postcards were discovered in an Oxfam charity shop in Herne Hill, South London, when two members of staff were sorting through donated books. The postcards slipped out and were almost discarded until one of the workers noticed the signature. It is thought that they came to be in the bookshop as a result of a house clearance. After months of research to find out whether they were genuine, it was later proved that they were indeed sent from the celebrated First World War poet to a friend in Yorkshire.
One depicts a view in Italy, another of Sassoon himself, and they are both dated 1930 meaning he was 44 when he wrote them. In one of them, he even criticises Robert Graves, the novelist and poet who used to be his friend. The postcards will now be sold by Bonhams in Oxford, and are expected to sell for £600 to £800. They will be sold along with other items found in Oxfam charity shops in a sale which is expected to raise £20,000 for the charity.
