A Hoard Of Tribal Art Carvings And Other African Treasure Valued For IHT
Earlier this year i was contacted by a large law firm in Vancouver Canada and asked to meet a UK client to collect keys for a property in Greenwich South East London and carry out a probate valuation of the house contents and later clear the entire contents
I received the keys and made my way to the property in Greenwich the following morning arriving at 9 am. As I entered i immediately encountered a wonderful arts and crafts oak bench from the Orkney islands worth around £800 and from there on the house was crammed with he most wonderful items i have eve had the pleasure of valuing
Entering at lower ground level i was confronted by a large and fantastic book collection focused on tribal art painting and modern design all house in a stylish custom made set of Scandinavian book shelves. The books commanded a good value of around £1500, and from here i moved up to the ground floor
Art And Crafts As Well As Modern Design
Entering the Lounge on the ground floor i was immediately faced with what i can only describe as an Aladdins Cave full of tribal carvings modern art twentieth century design furniture glassware and much much more. African figures masks carved animals bronze figures from every part of Africa including Nigeria Mali Ghana South Pacific Islands Congo Guinea and other African countries. Glass and ceramics from English studio potteries Danish designers and an abundance of artifacts from Canada and the South Pacific Islands, too much to speak of. Furniture By Charles and Ray Eames as well as Verner Panton and other classic twentieth century designer.
The kitchen attached to the lounge was full of high quality kitchenalia and cutlery by good makers such as Renzo Piano Robert Welch David Mellor and kitchen ceramics by Knabstrup Marianne Starck Michael Andersen a beautiful Soholm Atelier Vintage 1950s Danish Scandinavian balanced biomorphic pottery teapot. Another treasure was a set of the lovely Negro series tray by Marianne Stark for Michael Andersen & Son
Rugs Paintings And Works Of Art
The upper floor was the next pleasurable task due to the fact that it housed over 100 paintings and works of art ranging from contemporary artists as well as a good number of 19th and 18th century works which were carefully catalogued for valuation. AS well as art i noted around Thirty antique rugs and a large amount of African textiles and clothing
Final Probate Value Established For Probate And Inheritance Tax Calculations
After a considerable amount of time and effort and along with my team of experts I valued all works of art house contents and chattels at a figure just over £100,000 at open market values for the purposes of probate and inheritance tax calculation. This was a very interesting and rewarding job for me and not the run of the mill job by any means
